No wonder I found this at a used books sale. The previous owner must’ve disliked it, too.

There are times…when our victories have a cost that we did not foresee, when winning brings us loss.

Morgenthaler had never liked children, and recently they had become absolutely repellant to him. Children were tiny anarchists, miniature id-monsters from hell. They did what they wanted whether or not it was a good idea, and whether or not they had permission.

Now he laughed for real, a considerably less even sound, and he looked away from her as he did, as if he might muffle the truth of it by so doing. This was obviously not a sound he meant to hand out to people.

They can rule the world while they can persuade us / our pain belongs in some order.

Only in one small country was the ruler elected by the people, who could remove him whenever they wanted--and they called him the Tyrant...Every 5 years someone was elected to be Tyrant, provided he could prove he was honest, intelligent, sensible and trustworthy. Immediately after he was elected, of course, it was obvious to everyone that he was a criminal madman...

The premise seems so interesting but the execution makes it, well, boring to read

This book could be a third of its size and communicate the same idea, considering that much of what's extra here is lengthy quotes and the author repeating herself over and over and over. I've never read theory quite this boring before, nor encountered a critic who perfectly embodies the phrase "captain obvious."

Faust is just having polite conversation with the devil after practicing exorcism magic on him like that's just day to day routine 🤔

Why there's still all this space inside me / I don't know.

Visually-appealing but the tone is irritatingly didactic.
