Some of these similes are great, but some of these are really reaching.

More than a third of the way in and it feels like nothing's happened yet.

What a page-turner! As the mystery unravels I get increasingly invested. I have to stop myself now or I'm going to screw up my sleep schedule.

Turns out it was a terrible idea for a person like me (extremely minimal knowledge of the stock market) to listen to this on audiobook; I keep having to rewind/pause to look things up. Sure am learning a lot, though!

Jeez, Brandon Sanderson really likes to use changing POVs to compliment his other MCs. It was pretty egregious in Elantris, not too bad in Mistborn, but it's back with a vengeance here.

Third time's the charm? Maybe this time I'll get through the trilogy.

Oh, lovely. His first Wall Street job after his investing one was also gotten through his father-in-law's close friend, who was the head bond trader. I still don't see how this is possible for "everyone."

Yeah, okay, so what about the non-white kids you mentioned could do just as well as you? Do they just get laughed out?

I'm only on chapter 2 and the "anyone can do it" message is such a joke already. He got his first investing job out of college as well as multiple Wall Street contacts through his father-in-law, for crying out loud!

As expected, Mark Hamill is fantastic in this audiobook.

Just got through the first chapter for a quick test-listen before a road trip tomorrow, and I've been immediately reminded why this is one of my favorite books. Absolutely haunting.

Tookie has just sleepwalked into a guarded, restricted building under medical anesthesia to overhear an important conversation. I guess that's one way to avoid having to explain how she got in.

Having reached the 1/3 point, some "delightful" "cultural" place names that have cropped up so far: "Taj Gardens in Chakra," "KremlinGrad" (where vodka comes from in this story), "NorDenSwee" (a Norway/Denmark/Sweden mashup), "Fuji" (it's a country in this book, not just a mountain), and "Kwaito, the land of safaris and tribal dance," among many others.

Tyra Banks just mashed a bunch of vowels with accents and called it a fictional language. Yeah, I think I'm done for today.

Barely 10% through and I'm already starting to regret this

In the middle of an argument about infidelity between Mr. and Mrs. De La Crème, Myrracle distracts them by whining about not being the center of attention. And the worst part is that it works: "Her voice and face were so adorable that the tension was momentarily forgotten."

I know that the point is to drive in how much Myrracle overshadows Tookie, but this is so over-exaggerated that it's hilarious.

So far, it is living up to all my horrified expectations, and more. (Quick sample of names from the first two chapters: Myrracle De La Crème, Albert Talbert, and Zarpessa Zarionneaux.)

Trying to get through this tome before the library due date.
