“Grace Paley once described the male-female writer phenomenon to me by saying, ‘Women have always done men the favor of reading their work, but the men have not returned the favor.’”

I'll just leave this here.

"Seven Types of Ambiguity" - I guess people who buy books "by meter" have always been obnoxious. Not only am I sure he won't read all those books but I am also sure he won't read any of those books.

1st story: The Intoxicated

How is it possible that this story was written in the 1940s?? I could have sworn it was written in the last 5 years. Crazy how timeless Shirley Jackson is.

Omg the first sentence slaps hard. I can already tell I'm going to love this book. I have high expectations, please don't disappoint me, little book.

The poor woman is not doing well physically or emotionally, and the only reaction from the men in her life is either violence or an erection. 💔

Everyone is banging everyone in this neighborhood. And now, with the liberties the new times have brought, men are sleeping with other men too. I'm not saying this isn't realistic though. Most small places do be like that.

"Why did I attract these weird old women? There was the famous poet, and Philomena Guinea, and Jay Cee, and the Christian Scientist lady and lord knows who, and they all wanted to adopt me in some way, and, for the price of their care and influence, have me resemble them."
Yo I've been relating to Esther way more than I would like to.

Damn, I regret so much not reading this book when I intended to, that is when I was 19. I would have identified with Esther so much. At that age, we shared so many of the same thoughts, experiences and feelings it's uncanny. Then again, I have the pleasure to read it at the same age she had when she published this novel, and look at it with the same set of fully-grown (albeit myopic) and nostalgic eyes.

I just looked up how old she was when she wrote this novel and when she died. I realized that in 6 days it will be the anniversary of her death, and that in a month I will have the exact age as she did when she died. To think that at my age she already had an ex-husband, 2 children, 2 suicide attempts, 2 published books (one of which was The Bell Jar), and I'm just chillin' over here like a 30 y. o. teenager.

I finally started the book I have wanted to read for more than 10 years now! And my first impression is how surprisingly contemporary it is. The world really hasn't changed that much in the meantime.
My second impression is how beautiful her prose is. If I didn't already know and love her poems, I could definitely tell she was a poet. The metaphors she uses are on another level.

Aladdin clothes himself and every one of his slaves in the most beautiful garments the world has ever seen, but leaves his mother to walk beside them in rags and tatters. Like??? I cannot say this is out of character, though; it is very much typical of a teenage boy to think about everything and everyone but his poor mother, who has sacrificed so much for him. Shame on you, Aladdin!

Just started the audiobook after finishing Burton's translation, and I honestly cannot believe how matter-of-factly this version states the murders of the sultan's and his brother's wives. Nothing is dramatic; it’s just like: "There goes my wife cheating on me with a black dude because he has a bigger dick. Oh well, I guess I'll have to kill her and every other woman I sleep with from now on"
