I was serene when I was a teenager. I became neurotic at twenty when I started to drink avocado smoothies and tried to only think positive thoughts.

Is this the most boring novel I have ever read? It’s a contender, for sure. Yet I plow forward and hope the next 300 pages are more interesting.

The opening chapters could be the start of a great gay romance between Frederic and Deslauriers. Alas, have to have a plot about wooing the married Madame Arnoux instead.

If the second half is as enjoyable as the first, this will be a contender for my favorite read of the year.

Picked this up on a whim and started reading because nothing else was grabbing me. Was just going to read a few paragraphs to see what the writing style was like, and here I am 100 pages into it. Far better than I anticipated it would be.

I haven’t been devoting the same amount of time to reading these last few weeks as I usually do, but I am enjoying this immensely despite my slow progress. Sad to think there will be no more Hilary Mantel books.
