I’m sorry, but the mental image of banana slugs using moss as blankets in their log beds is just the sweetest thing I’ve ever encountered in my life. MILBS (man I love banana slugs)

“I only knelt for a while in the place where the woods had once been, but were no longer, until I understood what every person understands eventually: that I had left home and could never return to it, and that there would never be a time when I did not miss it.”

Ouchie, that one hurt.

I’m worried the author doesn’t actually know the meaning of the word “pried,” because this is the second time it’s been used (incorrectly) to describe shutting something

Listen I’m genuinely trying my hardest to get through this without being a total b, and I can’t tell if it’s the narrator or the writing or me being in a bad mood or a mix of all 3, but I find all of the characters deeply annoying and I’m not sure why I just spent an entire hour listening to excessively flowery descriptions of a city when literally five minutes would have done just fine but I’m tired bro

I’m trying my best here, but between the slight southern twang of the audiobook narrator and the odd word choices (“pried my eyes closed,” “his eyes were shaking”), I’m not sure if I’ll make it through. Will reevaluate a bit later.

Girlllll I love a wriggling-underneath-someone-to-try-to-get-free-while-pinned-during-combat-training-and-accidentally-causing-the-opposite-of-intended-effect trope🤭🤭🤭

“It was not an honorable war. Morrough wanted people to be afraid or dead. The Guild Assembly defended the attacks, saying that the hospitals were run by the Eternal Flame as covers for military bases, and the surrounding countries swallowed the lie because it was easier than involving themselves in Paladea’s conflict.”

Oops, you dropped your barely-concealed metaphor for the current state of the US!

“Luc, newly crowned as Principate, had been certain that the citizens of Paladia would be shocked into reason once they realized they were aligning themselves with necromancers. Necromancy had been a mortal crime throughout most of the continent for centuries. Not even the Guilds would go so far. He had been wrong.”

Hoo boy, this hits a bit too close to home in the current political climate😬

I always forget that hemispheres are a thing. James Islington is from Australia, so it makes sense that South = cold and North = warm in this book with that context, but as a resident of the Northern hemisphere, boy it throws me for a loop every time
