DNF - lost interest in series - first book was entertaining, but urban fantasy isn’t generally my thing. Didn’t feel up to reading this doorstopper.

I may return to this book at a later date. For now, I’m returning it to the library barely touched. I adored Normal People and Conversations with Friends, but these 11 pages have been a slog. Lack of familiar structure shouldn’t equal completely flowless.

Adding this to my DNF pile. I hate the useless details and have found myself skimming over the majority of the pages to get to the plot.

"Tell them they can be great someday, like us. Tell them they belong among us, no matter how we treat them. Tell them they must earn the respect which everyone else receives by default. Tell them there is a standard for acceptance; that standard is simply perfection."

Wow. I can already say I agree with the experts that this book is one of the best fantasy books of our generation.

"Distant though it was from the remnant of a road, the house none the less impressed me unfavourably the very moment I espied it. Honest, wholesome structures do not stare at travellers so slyly and hauntingly..."

"One can see how a few bad experiences when approaching new things could turn the pause-to-check system into a pause-and-do-nothing system, a true inhibition system. The best way to avoid bad things would seem to be avoiding everything. And, of course, the more the world is avoided, the newer everything will seem."
