Whattt. This book is tough to crack. The dense style, vague narrator, and barely explained political tension started out interesting but left me wondering if I was actually missing the point lol. It’s hard to get my footing, but I’m telling myself that’s the point. That the repetition and circularity of the writing is supposed to mirror the repetition and circularity of trauma, gossip, and surveillance.

Am really liking how it’s picked up!!

Part two of my update! My first update still stands, but a lot of that (kind of, so-called) praise comes from my current appreciation of dystopian plot lines in general. As in, I’m liking the book for the context within which I’m reading it. That said, I have to say… the first third feels a bit rushed? And the writing can be a bit immature at times? Still forming my opinion on this but… just another update.

Ahhh yes, back to my dystopian fantasy fixation. So far, I’m into it. The beginning is reminding me of 1984, especially the idea of language as a tool for control. In 1984, Newspeak limits thought by removing words for contradictory ideas. In Red Rising, the class-based language and conditioning do the same, reinforcing hierarchy and oppression. Extra interesting à la American politics these days.

Not sure what I’m missing, but my first impression is that I’m reading the musings of an old man—and wondering why I’m voluntarily subjecting myself to this when patriarchal society already imposes it on me daily. Maybe there’s something I’m not getting, and my skepticism is making it harder to push through, but alas. Pausing this one for now!

Ok so update is… I’m kind of abandoning, maybe one day I’ll return to it but for now, it’s not in the cards for me
