Interesting ... I like this book a lot, mainly for the imagination; unlike some reviewers, the mixture of creatures across multiple parallel worlds appeals to me and I'd give a follow up book a try. One thing I didn't like was the overuse of bad metaphor ... Possibly trying too hard? Something a good editor should weed out..
