Powerful anecdotes and stories; and quick, pithy observations. None of the long-windedness and repetitiveness that loses me in a lot of non-fiction.

Light and fun so far. But while I loved Victorian reads as a child, I'm increasingly ambivalent about them. I fall back on them when I need something familiar and comforting. But they are just too far-removed from real life for cynical old me. The sexism and classism / elitism constantly on display is beginning to irk me quite a bit. I still love Trollope's droll wit, unfailingly on display.

Simple, unflinching prose.

Still going strong. Mukherjee's strong narrative voice makes this an easy read, despite the catch in your throat that persists throughout a book on cancer.

An almost page-turning read, with a fairly keen insight into these real-life people. Lots of shareable quotes.

So far, a light, fun read. I guess you could call it a beach read?
