Maybe because I am reading this after Malazan but not liking it. It feels like an amateur attempt at doing what Erikson does better. Or even Abercrombie.

I understand this was written first but it hasn't aged well when compared to the other 2 authors I mention above.

I feel like going back and re-rating book 5, Midnight Tides, at 3/5.

The amount of world-building and intrigue in the first quarter of the book surpasses anything that Midnight Tides had. I am very happy to read (hear?) Malazan back to how I like it and what made me enjoy the first 3, maybe the 4th book.

First chapter done and so far I don't like it whatsoever. Too verbose, classic example of tell not show.

So far this is easy to read / young adult version of Lord of the Rings. Sam check. Ring wraiths check. Gandalf and Aragorn check.

Then it also feels like Harry Potter lifted a few things from this.

Boring. Not what I expected yet. May not finish this.

Nowhere as badly written or haphazard as the reviews made it sound. Interesting so far.

I'm done with Neal Steohanson after this book. Horrible.

This book has presented the problems well so far. I just hope it doesn't end up recommending more governance as a means to curb the problems.

Probably the worst Joe Abercrombie book I've read yet. His strength is character development in small numbers. This reads more like song of ice and fire. Too many characters and poor development, if any.
