The amount of time I have spent going "Everyone in this book is so stupid." is the same amount of time I have spent reading it.

This book is SO unsettling. It was uncomfortable to read during lunch. Not because it was too gross (it was a little gross), but because you KNOW something is going to happen and it's not going to be good.

I may have made a terrible decision. This is VERY creepy.

Highly recommend to anyone who has ever been a part of a fandom online before. So far it's so much fun! I have a feeling it s going to rip my heart out though.

It's frustrating to read so many reviews of people harping on Vance for his "political views" and conservatism when this is just a memoir. I think this got a lot of weird marketing when it was billed as "the book that will explain why Trump won." It's not. It's just a memoir of growing up in Appalachia. It will definitely give a lot of people some perspective though, and so far hits very close to home for me.

Like if Memoirs of a Geisha were populated with witches and magic. I'm loving it.

"and then he said "Ah," suddenly, just as I began to glimpse his spell: almost exactly like the strange clockwork on the middle of his table, all shining, moving parts. On an impulse I tried to align our workings: I envisioned his like the water-wheel of a mill, and mine the rushing stream driving it around. "What are you-" he began, and then abruptly we had only a single rose, and it began to grow."

JUST LOVELY.

Kind of disappointed by this so far. So far it's just following the classic "Dystopian Heroine Must Lead a Revolution with her Plucky Allies and They Run Into Trouble!" formula that countless others have. I'm bored. I have read this story a thousand times.

Grossman has inexplicably decided to add current slang and abbreviations to this one? I don't understand. It completely dates the book and makes no sense for the characters. Elliot says at one point that someone is doing something "For the lulz" and another character says "OMG" out loud to herself, apparently. No one actually does that. So other than this, the book is fantastic so far.

The story is really interesting, but I cannot get over how the father (our narrator) treats his wife like shit. Her feelings are completely irrelevant and he blames everything that goes wrong on her and attempts to be some kind of martyr for his daughter.
