I just finished The Good Guy, by Dean Koontz, published in 2007, so not a new one. It is, however, one of his best stories. Timothy Carrier, a not so simple brick mason taking his ease in a friend's bar one night, is mistaken for a hired killer. Feeling somehow at fault, he sets out to save the potential victim from a mad and ruthless killer.
