The chapter "Babies" is so hard to read! The last part about pregancy and babies not surviving... read at your own risk. I actually like how it is written in the second person plural, feels like a portrait of a whole comunity and not just a character. Feels like an epic tale about a comunity.

Spoilers* Interesting points done so far. Specially about identity: belonging to a family automatically makes you similar to them? Can you or how can you build yourself from scratch? Other people perceive Kate as her family history before they even try to acknowledge her for herself. Violet too! Also, mom guilt starts soon in this story. Kate would be criticized either for abortion or for being a single mom.

Books with houses as a center piece of the story are worth living for! This has been a very interesting story!!

Also! 3 different stories in 3 different time periods!! And in different types of narrators... 🥰 Emilia Hart already wins at writing!

I think this is going to be a 3 star book. So many monents when story could be told on fewer pages. Still, this might be one of my most annotated books. These characters are NUTS and I like to write bout it!

"Duality ceases to exist; there is no ego, no 'I' (...) the universe expands to fill the boundaries of the self. You have no idea how pallid the workday boundaries of ordinary existence seem, after such an ecstasy."

Can someone explain to me how a novel that is a exaggeration, hyperbole and caricature of the "dark academia" lifestyle can become one of the main sources of this lifestyle...? Am I making myself clear enough?
If we all read about how eccentric and elitist it is, how can we romanticise this? ---- No shade intended, just we need to understand how dark the book is gonna get and choose if we want this as a lifestyle

"If by romantic you mean solitary and instrospective," I said, " I think romantics are frequently the best classicists."
He laughed "The greatest romantics are often failed classicists.(...)"

I really can't deal with this book! Are these characters just so full of themselves or just excentric? Either way! I want more of it!!

Reading this as a mother is being harder than I thought. I just want to hug Luke and Avery and bring them home... Avery is described as 10 years old but I can only see this sweet boy in my mind as 5 or 6 years old! My heart!

Gaveyard shift, the second story, had me gagging imagining the mutant rats. SK nailing it!! Best descriptions with out being boring or seeming fake.

I just finished "Jerusalem's Lot". I recognized Chapelwhaite's house name because of the TV series right away and I got instantly excited. I haven't watched the series but it is on my list and now I really have to!
I'm sorry for myself to have taken so long to find the time in life to read this short story. It was a love letter to myself, the kind of story I like to read!
