I had forgotten how good this was. I think thirty years ago this was my introduction to historical novels. Bernard Cornwell really knows how to tell a story. So glad I kept these first editions all this time to read again, over a generation later.

Slower going than I thought it would be.

Buehlman doesn't do light hearted. And that's sort of the point. Been looking forward to this one since it was released last year.

An utter pleasure so far. The author writes in an endearing and engaging way, it's not too academic and I'm learning things about history as well as music.

Seriously thinking of not finishing this. It just winds me up with all the nonsense he talks. It's why it's taking me so long so get through it. I can only handle his nonsense about once or twice a month.

I can't for the life of me work out why this book has done so well.

I suppose I'm reading to see where I'm going wrong. There may well yet be some nuggets of extraordinary insight....

But I'll stick with it.
If you're going to study magic, then study magic. Don't study pseudoscience. Dispenza states many things that are simply out and out false, claiming some scientific basis for them. A curious book.

Utterly sublime storytelling.

Still reading it out loud to my missus. I'm really enjoying it, doing the different voices. I've got Tony down as a manic Frank Muir 😉

My missus hadn't read any Nevill before, and I'd been recommending this one for a while. However, because I've been wanting to re-read this one myself for ages, I've ended up reading it out loud to her, which is different. So we can essentially read it at the same time. As gripping as I remembered it.

I'm doubtful. But I'll give it a go.
