This book has been making me reach out to my first years as an undergrad, but Jameson's tone is so warm and clear that it hasn't really been anything like a chore. Picking this up has been really fun and interesting, so glad I got a copy.

Wait, so this dumb motherfucker didn't know his colleague's (and implied rival) last name??? It is also extremely lazy from the author to spring this on us, rather than mentioning it earlier and hope we'd forget about it until this reveal. This is not how you write plot twists.

It's extremely readable, but the prose is atrocious. What ever happened to actually caring about the art? Also, at least half of the chapters end with an "ominous" line and it's starting to become grating.

Diomedes is like”That is a reductionist stereotype, that puts people like me in little boxes… You chose the right box though, I will admit.”

The book is fun, but the premise is absolutely bonkers: who would hire a bunch of college students to steal art from all over the world? And also, what are they planning to do when the museums recognise their shit? (sure, they've stolen it first, but still, a weird look)

Wordplay in multiple languages and a bunch of Poe references, this is as Nabokovian as it gets

It was a nice day outside today and I felt like reading, and somehow I managed to get three quarters in. I'm probably finishing it tonight.

The book is fun and all, but the writing makes a point of discussing the different backgrounds of the characters, and somehow they all still have Mexican traditions??? Lita is Cuban but cooks Mexican food, wears Mexican clothing, and follows Mexican traditions. Julian is asked if he celebrates Día de Muertos and his response is “no, we’re not religious” instead of “no, we’re Colombians”.

The worldbuiliding is really fun, but I'm stuck asking why would future humans go back to feudalism IN SPACE.

It was all going fine until the chef stated that paella has chorizo in it (NO) and that it is a staple in Andalusian homes (paella is from Valencia, which isn't really all that close to Andalucía). I like her writing and characterization, but wikipedia is free.

This is so weird and twisted and creepy and fascinating. I'm not quite sure what is going on, but it's dark and weird and that's my jam.

Este libro es todo lo que necesitaba: brujería, sociedades secretas, horror cósmico. Amor eterno a Mariana Enríquez.

Despite the gory and darker moments, this book is an absolute delight! I love the narrator's attitude and the way he sees the world, so I'm glad this was my first book in 2020.

Emily Nussbaum just put her finger and explained (way better than I could have done) my issue with season 1 of True Detective: while I enjoyed it (it's pretty much my aesthetics and the kind of tone I love), there's a massive issue with the female characters, who are all quite shallow and irrelevant to the plot. Dead women, wives, daughters, prostitutes. Nothing revolutionary or even mildly interesting about them.
