Dan Bennett is on page 121 of 352 of Accelerated C++: Practical Programming by Example
First C++ book I've read, and some good things about it but I'm not overkeen on the style - they tend to show before explaining. I understand this is intentional since they want to teach the useful stuff first, but I get on far better with the K&R style of building from first principles.

Some of this so far is really fascinating and enlightening. I think this is developed from her PhD though and it has that character. Sometimes the academic formulas become tiresome.

The essay is on the whole dispensable, but the art is great. Keep coming back to it.

Bit patronising so far. I'd rather read an architecture textbook.

Every essay so far is great. Smart but a long way from being drily academic. The funniest warmest academic book I've read for a long time. The subtitle "to computer users with love and respect" is clearly sincere, and "computer users"

The first, Ghosts, is amazing. I loved it but for some reason I've not gone back for the other two yet

Dan Bennett is reading Point Omega
New Tao Lin isn't a million miles off DeLillo gone clumsy. "He went back to the wall at the north end, passing the guard at the door. The guard was here but did not count as a presence in the room. The guard was here to be unseen. This was his job. The guard faced the edge of the screen but was looking nowhere, looking at whatever museum guards look at when a room stands empty."

So far, the taut macho prose doesn't do a good job of hiding how treacly sentimental this is.

I've not picked this book up for weeks. The status is aspirational.

Surprised at the prose style. Quite different from Blood Meridian and certainly The Road.
