Picking this back up and just want to say how refreshing it is to be energized by an author's POV (in contrast to some other books I've recently finished)

I've just got to the part where Mary Louise does something insane on her birthday and I CANNOT READ FURTHER. Nobody has stopped her, maybe nobody will, but I can still stop myself from reading anything further of her enraging antics.

"She thought the pain in her shoulder was yet another symptom of middle age that would disappear on its own, to be replaced by something else. All these minor ailments turned out to be nothing, unless they didn’t, and then you were reprimanded for not having had them checked out earlier."

This guy's literally been dead for 410 years and yet he still makes my heart race. Incredible.

One perfect line in the middle of a fun book:

This is a really good read. Not through any fault of the author or book, it's taken a long time to get through it.

"I couldn't embrace the good news of the gospel or the hope of Jesus' Kingdom come, here and now, until I embraced the good news written in my thick mixed hair, the face of Jesus' Kingdom staring back at me in the mirror...he would have kimchi breath too."

Sometimes charming but overall a slog -- author insert repeatedly forms a crush on the nearest mansplainer, is repeatedly disillusioned, and repeatedly learns nothing of his own nature or anything else.
