Okay, is there such thing as an audiobook that doesn't sound whiny? The story's set up well at 15% in for something really great to happen, and I hope it does 🤞🏼 expectations high

Now this is the kind of YA fantasy novel that's a delight.

Okay, I'm really trying to finish this bc my kids picked it out of a little free library for me and they don't want me to give it back until I "Actually Read It"... but it's work to stay in the story.

Surprisingly respectful/progressive in its attitudes toward and depictions of Native-Settler relations.

My brain is on fire right now in a good way. There's so much to learn and think about here!!

Picking this back up and just want to say how refreshing it is to be energized by an author's POV (in contrast to some other books I've recently finished)

I've just got to the part where Mary Louise does something insane on her birthday and I CANNOT READ FURTHER. Nobody has stopped her, maybe nobody will, but I can still stop myself from reading anything further of her enraging antics.

"She thought the pain in her shoulder was yet another symptom of middle age that would disappear on its own, to be replaced by something else. All these minor ailments turned out to be nothing, unless they didn’t, and then you were reprimanded for not having had them checked out earlier."

This guy's literally been dead for 410 years and yet he still makes my heart race. Incredible.

One perfect line in the middle of a fun book:
"But this is a dread no artisanal charcuterie can deactivate."
