Whoa the language has aged poorly, although I'm willing to give it a pass as the author is trying to convey the attitudes and viewpoints of Cpt Cook and others of their time.

I have now, for a very long time, put off reading anything by Octavia Butler, because I knew that it would shake me to my very core. And damned if I wasn't right.

But now is the time to be shook.

An America set in a post-apocalypse because of climate change, social inequity, and wealth inequality?

Fuck.

I need to finish this book immediately.

This book is HUGE! It feels like I've been reading it forever, and it turns out I'm barely 1 percent in!

The layout is horrendous and the chapter breaks are arbitrary; many happen in the middle of a conversation! The story is interesting to be sure, but at this rate it's getting a 3 out of 5 for how jarring of a read this is!
