Kettricken! This book has me in a chokehold already.

What a simple but lovely writing style. This book is hard to put down.

“You can’t stop a country from happening, Good Stab.”
“But we were already a nation,” he said up to me. “We didn’t ask you to come.”

Oof.

The pacing in the second third of this book is waaaay off. Trying to push through this afternoon to the last act.

When a character spits the word “thaumaturgy” as an insult at his interrogator, there is no question the book deserves five stars, if for that alone.

“What I am is the Indian who can’t die.
I’m the worst dream America ever had.”

I heard that if you liked the all-too-brief Choctaw scene in “Sinners” (which I did!), then this book is a natural next step. It’s my first Stephen Graham Jones, and the writing style is a bit odd, in a way that I appreciate. It’s unlike anything I’ve read before, throwing me off-kilter in a good way. So far, I’m enjoying sinking into the rhythm of his voice.
