No teacher or adult I remember ever said during or after the mini-series, “Hey, there’s a prize-winning book behind this you should read.” Fifty years later I’m reading and can see how important this narrative of slaves points of view changed our world. But our world hasn’t changed enough. We are still unrepentant as a nation and world of slavery, war, and genocide.

Lyrical and delicious enough that I don’t think about food when I read.

Don Ross was an Oklahoma legislator for 20 years who was a civil rights activist and author of a memoir called pillage of Hope. The book tracks his growth from history denier, to believer in the atrocities that happened in the 1921 Tulsa massacre and consequently became a warrior for equality. A must read for anyone wanting to learn important history of those fighting for justice in Tulsa and Oklahoma.
