There are few things more irritating than a young artist funded by various fellowships and workshops and grants, who wants to live in a hip ‘queer’ neighborhood in a cool city complains that the neighborhood they just moved to is “being gentrified.” 🎶🎶 it’s me! I’m the problem! It’s me!🎶🎶

This book reminds me of Remains of the Day, in a meta sort of way, in that we are regaled with tales of these people’s dinner parties but are told to ignore that they were a bunch of nazis.

A real barrier to enjoyment is that the author clearly thinks her readers are stupid

This is one of the genre of feminist books that AGGRESSIVELY dumbs down its language and content as if it thinks that an audience of ladies must be semi-literate.

The strangest, most off-putting thing about this book is that the author uses literal prison chain gang labor for her field work and never once reflects that this might be immoral.

I’m sometimes distracted by the author’s broader political point because I am so overcome with desire to track down the author’s ex-husband and murder him in an extremely gory way.

DNF because I could not take the clan of the cave bear style ahistorical nonsense anymore.

This book is charming but it reminds me of clan of the cave bear in that the heroine is able to intuit a lot of 21st century medical knowledge just because she’s very plucky. Also she invents moralistic therapeutic deism in 1348 and it’s wildly popular amongst the serfs.

People who either object to the incest in this book or act like it’s a weird twist that comes out of nowhere are weak and pathetic. This book rules.
