This book deftly illustrates the contradictions inherent in the studio system--the glamour on the outside and the grime on the inside, without presenting it with artifice or melodrama. Something I keep noticing is that she is loyal to a fault--if she had a good rapport with someone, it deeply offended her to see others frame them in a negative light. Her honesty about her bias really helps the read. Fascinating lady.

It’s possible I’m biased because of some circumstances in my life + how bad the last book I read was, but I’m enthralled.

The prose is gorgeous, and the romance is incredibly gripping. I love how the author tries to point out the pitfalls of toxic masculinity through the lens of the Iliad.

Patroclus is not a complex character, but somehow I don’t mind. The characterization works for me as part of an epic.

Wowwww the double whammy of the unforgivable treatment of depression in this novel (Marina is treated as a burden to her husband and her children and the sentiment is that everyone, including her, is better off after her suicide) and Phillip, our protagonist, being physically abusive to his young children is so awful. I don’t know how I’m going to finish this one.

As if the self-admitted coercion, blackmail, etc. wasn’t enough……. I am literally so tired of these two characters
