The title story, Shoko’s Smile, offered a brief insight into the individuals whose personal qualities and upbringing have moulded them into the individuals they are today. The story also portrayed the concept of family, which is not necessarily restricted to biological relatives, as evidenced by Soyu’s bond with her mother and grandfather and Shoko’s connection with her grandfather and aunt.

“When I’m with my husband, I don’t need to see our friends. I also don’t have any desire to visit my parents, and I don’t miss my children. My husband is enough for me.”

The unnamed character in this novel just may be related to the unnamed character in Ottessa Moshfegh’s book Rest And Relaxation. I’m kidding, but not entirely. Though different, both are downright wacky.

"The new morning, when I take out the blister pack of antidepressants, I pause: if I am happy, not depressed, why go on taking them? Putting the pack back in my suitcase, I decide not to take one, and then get on with the day... After a few days I notice a change. It is just a faint tremor at first, but it is unmistakable: depression, returning to afflict me once again."
