“Full of self-consciously archaic vocabulary, baroque turns of phrase cribbed from seventeenth century memoirists, and also high-Romantic self-aggrandizement and self-pity.,..”. Yes, this. Exactly the style in which this book is written, as if language is being used to obstruct meaning.

I’m listening to this talking book through the nights as my way of avoiding all political podcasts, given the world is going to hell in a handbasket and the news is unbearable.

This is a murder mystery, Zac! Not my best genre. I’m committed to finishing it though. Well written and very compelling, elegant world-building.

Only 1/4 of the way in, and already a character has expeditiously died from “lung contagion”. Sick on the middle of page 44, and dead by the next paragraph.

Lung cancer alert!

Yuck. Just learned I am no fan of dark fantasy. This gory mess turned my stomach.

I must not be in the right mood for this book because I normally love magic realism, and this book has the feel of Gabriel Garcia Marquez or a much less graceful Isabel Allende. But I just can’t get hooked. Reading this book feels like a chore, not a pleasure. So, back to the library it will go, unfinished.

Not enjoying this dark tale so I’m returning it to the library unfinished.

After two tries, I’ve realized that I don’t like this book and am not prepared to spend another minute on it.

Unreadable.
