Not really loving this. Being the sort of reader who is easily impressed, I was initially enamored with the book's gritty eschatology and protagonist Stark's hardass posturing. In my defense, this is a book with a heck of an opening, with our hero waking up in a burning dumpster after escaping from the bowels of hell. But the book cannot sustain this level of supernatural noir. The tough-guy thing is just pandering.

Kevin is 33% done with The Tick: The Complete Edlund
Having read the first four books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series in quick succession, I felt a diversion was needed. That diversion was not to be Gunther Glass' The Rat, which I cracked open and found a bit opaque, but Ben Edlund's The Tick is endlessly silly and uproariously funny

I've made allowances for Peck's religious feeling for much of the book; after all he never claimed to be unbiased, and he had some genuine insight. In the present chapter however he confuses human evil with supernatural evil, and gives a witness account of two exorcisms that is possessed of gobsmacking naivete.

And when reading resumed after much procrastination, the Library spake, saying, Thou canst not have an extended loan on The Wrestler's Cruel Study. And it was begrudgingly returned, incompletely read as it was.
