Autobiographical, the author watches his friend die from AIDS shortly after being diagnosed himself, then describes his own dying process. Apparently when the book was first published in 1990, the French media quickly identified this close friend as Michel Foucault. Really recommend it, probably the most interesting book I’ll read all year
