A delight in both content and style. I think the issues Egan addressed in this 1998 book, his third I believe, are as relevant today as they were when Lasso was just off the press. Great research and a wryly slanted approach to his subject make this a read I have difficulty setting aside.

Fascinating and very readable for general audiences. After the heavy lifting of Consilience and Sociobiology this little gem is truly a delight.

Sorta depressing actually. Lynching, censorship and voter suppression are still raw in the American mind as desirable means towards “saving” what we have ostensibly valued. This book has notable historical figures on both sides of this debate and calls on the reader to reexamine often long held beliefs incurred from high school history.
