I know what's bothering me about this book. One thing I often think about is the effect which living under constant threat has on people. I think they shut down... it's a deep paranoia and emotional numbness. And the characters here lack that. They are mostly as soft and touchy-feely as a bunch of romance novel characters. I might have been willing to overlook that if the plot action hadn't been so gritty.
