This is shaping up to be my first 5 star read of the year!

So far I like this book! It’s kind of a fun little mystery piecing together, giving an insightful look into living and legacy.

To say I’m trucking through is an understatement. I so wish this had lived up to the hype but unfortunately it’s an extremely mid duology for me. Almost all of the characters feel underdeveloped and there are interesting plot developments that aren’t well addressed. It’s a fun read that I get 5% through a day but it’s not much more than that :’(

Ok so I actually hate this book now!!

This is truly a magnificent book. Wow.

This book is just devastating. Based on all of the high reviews, I was not expecting such a hard read, emotionally. That being said, Lawhon’s writing, i.e. her characterization and imagery, is just phenomenal. And I love the story, especially the awareness this brings to the trials of being a woman, but this is hard read.

This book as a whole is better than the first, but I forgot how much the first half drags in comparison to the second half. It’s needed, don’t get me wrong, but I keep having to tell Nathan “don’t worry it picks up”

While I love the way this book is written and the smooth prose & dialogue, I unfortunately am so very ~frustrated~ with some of these character choices… also - Connell’s characterization is a bit contradictory but I choose to look the other way

I didn’t realize this book was GEY - the one-liners being dropped rn are INSANE! This man is down BAD

As far as YA novels that tackle hot topics go, this is a good read. I remember when I read IANYPMD, I was annoyed by the protagonist, how much the book was trying to do, and the way it handled real issues. In comparison, this is SO MUCH BETTER! Additionally, Starr’s life feels so real to my own students -esp in Chicago- and I love that.

Her treatment of the guards is so touching. Also - she got so excited bc of the book and had to take the rest of the day 😭
