I wish I had read this book years ago when I first encountered it and placed it on my TBR list. I would have learned a great deal more about books & maybe aquired a better understanding of my own love affair with books. Also, back then I would have read with a much less critical awareness of the writers style & the overall lack of power in the telling of this interesting story.

Fri. Feb. 18 8:30am Just on the second page of the story but I'm laughing out loud and already hooked. Over and over I've re-read and laughed each time at the chapter that ends, "... Still Amelia had not allowed herself to be certain until dessert, when she asked him about the book that had had the greatest influence on his life, and he'd replied Principles of Accounting, Part II."

This is a hugely enjoyable read. The words on the page jump at me in muslical rythyms. The writer tells his story at a pace that has me totally intrigued to see what whill happen on the next page. His use of words is perfect.

Been a while since a novel has captured my attention like this one. Erika, a woman with a heavenly voice wants a child but also wants a career as an opera singer. She is married to Peter, a wealthy, loving man who wants children too. Neither of them know that Peter is sterile. The story takes place during the early 20th century, as Dr. Ravell uses cutting edge techniques of his day & treachery, to help this couple.
