Ok, so if I had a nickel for every Simon & Schuster women's lit debut I read this month that features family drama with chapters indicated by nonlinear years, I'd have two nickels but mannnnnn the Brights at least seemed hopeful re: overcoming trauma while I want to drag all of the Blisses to therapy stat

"One of the most disorienting parts of parenthood is how it can warp your sense of time. Or maybe not warp. Maybe what children do is straighten time out. Like clock hands, they keep us ticking forward even as we try to apprehend the lines and circles of it."

This will be a multi day read, so also marking in here to keep track of my place. Tonight we made it through the East and Central sections, though H was asleep as we finished Birmingham Civil Rights/Freedom Riders spread.

Ah, I can see why someone in my reading sphere thought this was a bit of a fic cash grab, but I'm curious enough to see where these different viewpoints go.

Still slowly working my way through this- currently in the Rock Springs massacre amidst the "driving out" period of the 1880s

I... am surprised that a 20-21 year old apprentice solved the one magic issue no one else had thought of prior but I guess we wouldn't have a plot otherwise

Also I need her to not racially profile when looking for the bad guy...

Epilogue left to go (so then it's photos and notes and bibliography for the remainder, I suppose).

The optimism of the last chapter is depressing considering how much climate legislation got ripped apart by the current administration

Danielle T is on page 18 of 240 of Asian American Histories of the United States (ReVisioning History)
An interesting case of chronology- per the index, starting with recent events and working backwards in time though I think it's also *thematic*, so the first is the 2020 #StopAsianHate but also how it connects to xenophobic perceptions linking Asians to disease throughout history like back to Angel Island days and earlier.

"When being mixed race comes up, people invariably and perhaps unknowingly assess your legitimacy by asking- "Do you speak the language?" People of color usually listen to the response, knowing that language and family never have clear-cut answers, but white people almost inevitably cut me off mid sentence to the me they understand how with immigrant families, it's all about assimilation..."

A multigenerational tale and I didn't know it was a Pulitzer winner! The reticence of family to speak of history is very familiar- as much as my brother jokes about me writing one, I feel I'd have to take a similar tack because the fear is still present even though you can't deport a corpse.

Really enjoying this- it's sat on my shelf literally for years since I picked it up on a previous Prime Day, but it's so fun! I'm reminded of Six of Crows in that it's a found family of young people doing a heist, but set in fictionalized Paris before the 1889 World Exposition adds delightful flavor to it.

So far a lot of these essays resonate with me- was also not expecting one on virtual parenting communities (though Anjali writes about them in the 2000s so like, babycenter groups and blogs, not the current discord/subreddit verse)
