I apparently "checked out" this book from Kindle at some point and I'm annoyed with the "you have ten items and need to return something"message when I think I'm attempting to get a free read? So while I could return, I'll just give it a stab for my ebook streak. Anyway very generic romance thus far but it's early

Shelf book, that knocks out several of the quarterly goodreads reading challenge categories.

Also- I hear there's an adaptation?

... we're only halfway but there's a conspicuous absence of Nellie and her sisters which is WILD considering they become Samantha's adopted family in Changes for Samantha!!! Especially since adoption is relevant to the plot!!!!!

having Raquel be Samantha Parkington's great-great-granddaughter is absolutely nostalgia bait but it's working for me as we pull out Sam's old clothes out of a trunk lol.

Well, I was just going to read this but then H wanted me to read it to her. She bailed halfway through the first chapter- fair enough, she's 3 and this has a lot of words- but omgggg Grandmary and Samantha illustration 😍

A lot of interesting parallels- I am less familiar with Chinese Canadian history but of course it runs in a similar direction (though their exclusion act was between 1923 and 1947, though that does coincide with tighter restrictions around the Asiatic Barred Zone in the US's 1924 immigration law).

Really digging the parallel of ancestral hungry ghosts with the ongoing climate disaster.

Ah, we have a similar ancestral trajectory with great grandparents from the Toisan area (she uses "Taishan" as the most common pinyin but given it's a Sze Yup region I personally prefer the Cantonese romanization... someone in linguistics can yell at me, I suppose)

Reading excerpts from *The Warrior* treatment just make me want to rewatch Warrior haha. Bruce was ahead of his time.

This is due today without further renewals because someone has a hold on it so we'll see how far I get...

From the intro, sounds like this is attempting to be a comprehensive look at contextualizing Bruce Lee within Asian American history, and right off the bat him being born in San Francisco is directly compared with Wong Kim Ark's Supreme Court victory for birthright citizenship- the current admin would call him an anchor baby derogatorily as the chapter is titled.

Whoops, didn't log my initial progress... Anyway stayed up and binged >200 pages. There's a content warning at the beginning for SA and rape, so I've been eyeing most of the cis guys with dread the entire time. I did read Private Label but dang, Kelly Yang's YA pulls no punches and feels so different from her middle grade (though like Front Desk I want to root for the mains to succeed!)

Read the next two tonight:
Madeleine's Rescue- Genevieve is a very good doggo! Also: the utter terror of Ms. Clavel being correct about the danger of walking on the railing of a bridge over the Seine.

Madeline and the Gypsies- the classic "run away with the circus" story. I changed the g word to Romani as I read this and it didn't interrupt the rhyming couplets. Negative stereotype of kidnapping too, alas.

Technically, this is a reread for me because this is my childhood copy of the Madeline anthology. H got Madeline stickers at school today and was sticking them to herself (I think they might've actually been from the '90s- maybe Ms Carrie's stash is like my mom's) so I figured we should start.

Got through both "Madeline" & "Madeline and the Bad Hat". 1930s France is charmingly illustrated! "[Pepito] is mean." -H
