Chapters are pretty short thus far, vignettes of the initial police response in the beginning, and sketching out the first several years of the four students in Part 1: the Innocents (stopping because I should sleep)

Not to be all, "let me compare every Black historical horror to each other", but a juke joint in the 1920s having a good time before the protagonist faces some horror reminds me of Sinners, and if you haven't seen that go see it please; it's really good! The audiobook is definitely the way to go, with snippets of singing and rhythm (or lack thereof)

Y'know, between this and Lovecraft Country I do like adding a supernatural element to real life racism (but that's probably not an original comparison).

The more unhinged thought: a trio of women hunting monsters reminds me of Kpop Demon Hunters even though obviously this is way before lol

... another pick to attempt double dipping on Fall Challenge badge categories (Spine Tinglers and Bite-Size Books), but also I've heard it's good and I'm already impressed by the audio! Sometimes attempted southern accents can be hit or miss but this nails the soft Georgia sound. Looking forward to more gullah-geechee later per the intro note.

My current theory is that the elder Van Laars are so obsessed with perfection and image that they killed both grandchildren over the decades and that Jacob is a red herring.

Also interesting reading this after Trust earlier this fall, which also had to do with a wealthy New York financier obsessed with image

Starting my reread for the bumpiverse book club (and because I needed to start another book for Kindle app streak). Thought about saving it for after I finish This Inevitable Ruin, but might be fun to marvel at baby level one Carl and Donut.

Not super far in, but a very good pick for the Ritual theme thus far (and my husband's nomination too, so he can lead discussions next month haha)

Now: on to the actual book we're reading for book club!

I *might* binge this today, really loving it. Right now Jane in the flashbacks is asking Owl about funerals and I got a flash of why we picked book 3 for our book club.

Anyway, perfectly wonderful pairing between the AI being raised by a human in the present and a human girl raised by a ship AI in the past

hell yeah, Wedge creating another found family of miscreant pilots
