Maté has wonderfully woven compassion and frustration into his character descriptions, as well as his own connections and repulsions. He does an excellent job, as anyone who works in chemical dependency knows, of weaving the light and darkness, the strengths and vulnerabilities of his clients in the tapestry if what has become their lives.
