In what felt like a minute, summer started with its long days and warm, starry nights.

We stay like that, looking at each other as if we’ve discovered a new species of alpaca.

“Beauty is its own punishment sometimes. I’m constantly told I could be a model if I were taller and had a different face and body.”

But who’s to say that you have to belong to somewhere forever, anyway? Why do I have to belong to England, when everything there is gray and confusing and difficult?

'What's your name?' Coraline asked the cat.
'Cats don't have names. Now, you people have names. That's because you don't know who you are. We know who we are, so we don't need names.'

Yossarian marveled that children could suffer such barbaric sacrifice without evincing the slightest hint of fear or pain. He took it for granted that they did submit so stoically. If not, he reasoned, the custom would certainly have died, for no craving for wealth or immortality could be so great, he felt, as to subsist on the sorrow of children.

Morale was deteriorating and it was all Yossarian's fault. The country was in peril; he was jeopardizing his traditional rights of freedom and independence by daring to exercise them.

They were noisy, overconfident, empty-headed kids of twenty-one. They had ridden in speedboats and played tennis. They had been horseback riding. They had listened to the World Series and really cared who won football games. They were glad that the war had lasted long enough for them to find out what combat was really like. They were halfway through unpacking when Yossarian threw them out.

Millie was either having another George Michael dream or someone was blaring Wham. Either way, George was pleading with her to wake him up before she went anywhere. 😂

'Just pass the work I assign you along to somebody else and trust to luck. We call that delegation of responsibility. Somewhere down near the lowest level of this co-ordinated organization I run are people who do get the work done when it reaches them, and everything manages to run along smoothly without too much effort on my part. I suppose that's because I am a good executive.'

“I’m nuts. Cuckoo. Don’t you understand? I’m off my rocker. They’ve got a licensed psychiatrist up at the hospital who examined me, and that was his verdict. I’m really insane.”
“So?”
“So? Don’t you see what that means? Now you can take me off combat duty and send me home. They’re not going to send a crazy man out to be killed, are they?”
“Who else will go?”

There were no miracles; prayers went unanswered, and misfortune tramped with equal brutality on the virtuous and the corrupt.

And so began her journey to the North.

I dig the heels of my hands into my eyes. "Easier for you." I want to add, I could care less if she were Korean, but we've beat this horse before and it's an incredibly durable creature.

Mystery readers were everywhere, voracious, highly partisan, and passionate. They were among the store’s best customers, and unfailingly polite. In private they embraced a bloodthirsty desire for vengeance and the use of arcane poisons and sneaky sleuthing, but in public they were charming and generous.

Most of the time this is something people say when their houses are immaculate, and the idea is you say, ‘Oh, you should see mine,’ or something similar. In this case it really was a mess, and Nina found it enormously relaxing.

Not surprisingly, I haven’t taken the breakup well, and I have no plans to take it well in the future. My plan is to stay on the couch until she comes back to me. She always comes back to me. I collected all the books I thought I’d need before I took to the couch—there’s some Patrick Ness, an Ernest Cline, some Gaiman, Flannery O’Connor, John Green, Nick Hornby, some Kelly Link, and, if all else fails, Douglas Adams.

Nina could tell from his tone of voice that he was a morning person, that despicable breed.

Nina tried to pull herself together. She’d been irritable all week. Either her period was coming or she had a brain tumor, and at that moment the tumor felt more appealing, which probably meant it was her period. 🤣🤣🤣
