I'm less than 2 minutes into the audiobook and the protagonist is already being described as not like other girls, but it's okay. It's fine. This book is 25 years old. It probably invented the trope. 😂

This murderbot is more relatable than any other MC I've ever read. 😭

I just can't stand the narrator's terrible fake southern accent. Narrators, I'm begging you: just read in your own voice! 😭

There was an uncomfortable moment where the main character said she could recognize male or female gender in any species... which just doesn't even make sense. This character is a scientist who studies snakes (famously difficult animals to distinguish the sex/gender at a glance) and she basically just said "I can always tell"?? I'm not buying it. And I'm thinking about DNFing/returning this book.

Oh no, the change in audiobook narrators is so jarring. 😖

I'm having trouble paying attention to this audiobook because it's making me think about all the times I found skeletons in the woods as a teen (I used to go hiking alone off-trail almost every day). I'm pretty sure they were all deer skeletons. Pretty sure.

There are an oddly high number of My Little Pony references in this book. 🤔

DNF at 53%.

At first this book was bad. Then it got... really bad. This is why you shouldn't pay authors in advance for just an elevator pitch. 🥲

Oh god, this book was written in the 1970s. By a man. So yeah I guess I knew what to expect but it's still shocking when I come to it. Anyway slurs and sexism aside, I'm going to keep reading for now.

Chapter 10: They're eating at a "vegan" restaurant but one of the characters ordered a tuna salad. 🙄

This woman is seriously upset because she heard a scream, but here's the thing: I've let out a blood curdling scream, while living in an apartment, because a cockroach crawled across my bed. I promise my neighbors did not care.

It's a bit of a slow start. Hoping the plot will speed up soon.

If you actually read this book you'll find that it's about a neurodivergent young woman who had to forge her own path in life because the "normal" path just didn't work. I can very much respect that.

I'm... confused? I'm about a third of the way through this book and nothing has really happened -- I'm wondering if somehow I've slept through it? Gonna keep reading to see if something happens, but so far I can't even tell you if the story has had an inciting incident yet. I've heard so much praise for this book it must get better at some point, right? I may just not be in the right frame of mind for this book.

So far a pretty average book, as expected, but I'm impressed by the author's research of the medical conditions and terms he's writing about. So many writers don't bother to do any research when they include disabilities in their stories that I find myself pleasantly surprised when an author actually does the bare minimum research.
