Carla Freeman is reading Van Gogh Has a Broken Heart: What Art Teaches Us About the Wonder and Struggle of Being Alive
The last chapter got me. It had interesting stories of artists, beauty, and pain. I needed a word on how to remember what to do when you are trying so hard to love people in a world where we’re we can’t do it perfectly. And that we can hope in the Lord and find comfort in the glory reflected in art.

Carla Freeman is reading The Steep Ascent
This is my second read of Anne Morrow Lindberg’s after Gift of the Sea. It was a suspenseful little story with beautiful analogies and Biblical alliterations sprinkled about. How can one experience the joy of life without being afraid of the scary things? What a great question and a worthy attempt at an answer.

Carla Freeman is reading The Scarlet Pimpernel
Soooo good! This is a classic that doesn’t get proper buzz. It has a suspenseful, action packed plot with a love story at the center. It is essentially a moral tale with heroes who fight for life during the horror of the French Revolution.

“That’s all that brave means—not thinking about the dangers. Just thinking about what you must do. Of course you were frightened. I was too, today. But you kept your mind on what you had to do .”

Carla Freeman is reading Discrimination and Disparities
An articulate, intelligent case for the use of empirical data to solve social problems. Great common sense book in a world that seems upside right now. Sowell is a soothing voice of reason and calm rationality.

Comprehensive overview of the liberal arts tradition and the classical Christian school renewal. Took a while to get through because of density of material.

Carla Freeman is reading A Long Walk to Water
One step at a time... perseverance and hope characterize Salva, a child refugee in Sudan during the recent civil war that left a generation of “Lost Boys”. This was a great story to read with my 10 and 7 year old. It made for great conversations about many subjects and left us with great hope.

Carla Freeman is reading Will the Circle Be Unbroken?: A Memoir of Learning to Believe You’re Gonna Be Okay
“Nobody tells you grief feels exactly like fear.” Love Sean’s writing and his story. I lost my dad last year and I secretly want to be a writer so I related a lot. I think anybody would feel better about life after reading his story.

Carla Freeman is reading Uninvited: Living Loved When You Feel Less Than, Left Out, and Lonely
Very helpful. Good counsel on what to do with hurt and how to replace feelings of rejection and feeling left out with truth from scripture. She uses a lot of scripture and illustrations from the Bible to show how Jesus and saints dealt with rejection.

Carla Freeman is reading The Vanishing American Adult: Our Coming-of-Age Crisis—and How to Rebuild a Culture of Self-Reliance
A book that helps make sense of so much of things. I didn’t expect so much wisdom in one place. And like all my favorite books, it gave me many more books to read through a book list and a bibliography. I hope Ben Sasse will keep writing and leading thought.

Carla Freeman is reading The Hate U Give (The Hate U Give, #1)
Evil takes many forms but no greater evil exists than to wrongly take a life. It hurts my heart to think of this as realistic fiction. I pray for God to have mercy on us all and protect those who can’t protect themselves.

Carla Freeman is reading Courage, Dear Heart: Letters to a Weary World
Soooo good. So many great truths and such beautiful writing. I’m crying while reading the last pages. I’ve read many books in the last few years on why our hearts and minds so need good stories that move our affections to long for heaven and to understand that the spiritual world is just as real as the physical one we live in. Reynolds reminds us that we are still in the middle of our stories but know the end.
