Third-person omniscient is so out of vogue that seeing it is really throwing me off, but otherwise I'm enjoying it so far.

This really makes me think of how people still think things will get "back to normal" after COVID, when there isn't going to be an after-COVID, that it's going to be yearly surges that kill off the weakest until hopefully it evolves to be something no worse than the flu is now.

No lessons learned, everyone wanting to get back to the old ways that made this mess in the first place. I understand, Tetley.

Okay this is deus ex machina in the extreme. I was under the impression that this was more of a "shipwrecked with a knife and the clothes on my back" survivalist story, not "managed to grab everything useful you could possibly want from the wreck of the ship" story. It makes things much less interesting. Boo.
