I don't know why I feel so desperate for an Iliad reread right now, but I do. Maybe I need to be reminded that this isn't the first time faultless people have suffered so much death and destruction because of one man's grievance. I'm enjoying the Alexander translation so far. I want to love it, but I am really attached to the Fagles. We'll see.

I need to vent about this book to someone who has read it because damn

I’m compelled enough to read along to see what happens, but I’m figuring out why I’m not loving this trilogy the way I feel I should:

1. It’s so cinematic that I’d rather see it onscreen, particularly the fight scenes

2. I keep seeing it billed as “The Godfather with kung fu” and uh, I hate The Godfather

I wish more of these characters were likable.

A lot of male POVs right now, and I only kind of like one of them (Anden). Kind of hoping we have a Jaime Lannister situation with Ayt Mada and more is revealed with her POV.

Omg, it’s so heavy handed in the best way—GRAD SCHOOL IS HELLLLLL. Also, Ms. Kuang is very well read and wants us to KNOW IT, but I can’t fault her, ‘cause same, girl. I would also name blithely drop T. S. Eliot and Dante and Virgil in a paragraph with the tone of, “because you all know what I mean, right?”

I'm trying to read my first Moshfegh since so much is accused of trying to be Moshfegh but I might not be able to take all the odors.

Fuck this husband. Like, I knew what happens, and Stepford Wives is the same, but I'm still SO MAD!

For a mid century man, Ira Levin sure doesn’t think very highly of men, between this and Stepford Wives.

It’s only 40 pages, but I’m counting it as a book, because every sentence by Poe is that laborious

Kind of a bummer there are only 3 paladins to go, and that those books haven't been written yet. Why couldn't there be 50 surviving paladins of the Saint of Steel? I would read every one.
