As the daughter of parents whose families fled from China to Taiwan, this really speaks to me. But there is a lot of inside baseball and cultural / linguistic references that don’t get explained, so if I were reading this without decades of context from my parents I would feel lost

this book would be so much more enjoyable if the characters stopped overtly lecturing the reader about the evils of colonialism, classism, and the patriarchy.
