oh I can already tell this is a book I'm gonna need to buy a copy of so I can highlight and write in the margins on a reread.

I like other McEwan work, but this is such a slog. I think i don't enjoy academics enough for this because there's something interesting in the style but the story and characters are just meh

I love the historical context as well as the emphasis on diversity of tactics and how armed resistance, like nonviolence, was born out of the moment (e.g. war veterans returning home, specific communities, etc.) and were tactics adopted intentionally, pushing against the idea that nonviolence in particular was adopted purely out of moral/ethical belief
