Objectively speaking, the writing is very good, but I couldn’t endure the relentless misery the book portrayed. I read about half, and just couldn’t go on.

I’m three quarters in, and I’m exhausted. I think it’s a very good book, but I have to take a break.

Definitely not breezy reading. Interesting so far but full of digressions and overburdened by details.

Oliver Sachs is being entirely his usual cultured garrulous quirky self here again.
So far not much repetition.

Walden or, Life in the Woods
So far, I am seriously underwhelmed. The tone is that of superiority and proselytization. There are some surprisingly insightful remarks that sound very modern, especially those about corporations, but they are few and far between. Reading, or rather listening on...

That's an approximation since I am listening to it, but I am about 1/3 through. I started listening to it on my way up north for Thanksgiving. Not bad. Typical Bryson, quite entertaining. It's amazing how much you can write about one year, even if this is the year of Lindbergh's first successful solo flight over the Atlantic...Only Bryson can get to so many little quirky facts.
