James Hartley is starting Testimony: A Memoir
I ordered this last night before bed and got up to the news he'd died. Odd. Starting it later.

A re-read for me as remember loving this when I read it about 20 years ago. Big shock to discover the full-on racist language this time - maybe I read an expurged version last time. How come Hemingway gets a pass on this?

This is good fun but loving that they go to big boss man's house and his fridge is full of ice-cream (!!). Now that's a proper fantasy. Loving, too, that if this was written by a man big boss woman's fridge would probably be full of beers from all over the world.

Little break from this. It's toooooo long and dense. Interesting but depressing on a Kindle to have been reading it for about 2 weeks and to see I've got to 28%. Just a wee bit too informative.

About halfway through and as interesting as it is, this is tediously written. And then this happened, And then this happened. And then this happened. And then this happened.

James Hartley is starting Dubliners
Decided I needed to read/reread this - halfway through the Bowker biography. Skipped to the end and read The Dead first but now savouring each story from the start. Finding it easier to understand Joyce's "scrupulous meanness" idea of editing - especially when comparing the published version of The Sisters with earlier versions (easy to read online).

Hemingway is a great writer, without doubt, but I bet he was boorish and one of those people who only thought his own jokes were funny.

Working my way slowly through this bit by bit (more textbook, overview, than read from cover to cover study) and it is by turns obvious and fascinating. Two nuggets: humans are phylogenetically xenophobic and kissing developed from mouth feeding.

Starting to come to terms with what ethology is now, basically a way of studying humans as though they were animals - yes, I know they are, but watching, observing, quantifying and explaining them as if they were. The book, which is a text book, really, mixes psychology, anthropology, zoology and biology with some philosophy thrown in.Always interesting and fairly readable, and often fascinating and illuminating.

These are actually excellent, fairly easy reading. I'm doing one or two a night and looking forward to them and enjoying them despite the book being like two house bricks on the pillow.

James Hartley is on page 125 of 630 of Steve Jobs
Loving that Steve Jobs the man would have appalled many who now crave his products. Barefoot, reeking of BO and openly rude to those he considered below him (everyone, basically) - I´d love to see a few Apple poseur's faces if faced with the man himself. Van Gogh´s another one who would be hilarious to see mingling with his "fans". He wouldn´t even be allowed in his own exhibitions!

Ha! This book, which kind of sells itself on being about sex, drugs and rock and roll, starts at Lake Minnetonka. I´m a Prince fan and I´m sold!
