I so enjoyed the first book in the series but this one has had a very rocky start. You don't really pay attention to how many ways cruelty can be shown until every possible derogatory word is used within the first 20 pages of a book. Try replacing the words referring to an overweight person with derogatory words about race and you get a sense of how ugly those first pages are.

It surprised me how upset and shocked I am that Diamond's wife dies in the first few pages. I've liked her as a character. She has a good head on her shoulders and didn't take Diamond's guff but I'm still surprised how hard her death hit me.
