I rarely bail out on a novel, but I'm calling it quits on this. Hensher's prose is elegant, his commentary on the folly of imperialism sharp and oh so relevant... but it's just... too... damned... slow. I might have stuck with it if this all hadn't already been done- and much more effectively- in Flashman and The Man Who Would be King.
