the first part of this book (before Wanda grows up) is so devastating and literary that it has taken me weeks to pick it back up

Todd's prose takes a bit to get into -- the first chapter in particular feels overworked. Every sentence is stuffed with information. Strengths: each chapter almost feels like it could be a short story of its own. The portrayal of grief & suicidality is accurate and cutting. Throwaway paragraphs with deeper philosophical observations vary in effectiveness imo.

This is a pretty straightforward copy+paste of Pride and Prejudice so far. Which! Fine, but nothing that I haven't seen before.

okay on one hand, I love the rivals-to-lovers dynamic / pining romances with logical misunderstandings

BUT

1. Ali Hazelwood clearly has a Thing for tall, broad men and it gets tiresome
2. especially because it fuels rumors that her books started as Reylo fanfiction
3. and I never want to hear an adult woman calling her lover "daddy" ever again

go tell the bees that the plot needs to show up sooner -- every Outlander book has blurred together since book 7 :\ we miss a defined plot arc

go tell the bees that I had to return this to the library when I had just finished Chapter 62 and the library won't let me check it out again for 4 weeks

just a stray bit of heart damage, no worries (part 17 // part 3, chapter 36)

this series is predictable, formulaic, and often laughably absurd in its heterosexual nonsense and mere veneer of historical setting

but you can pry its comforting consistency from my cold, dead hands

I really hope Diana Gabaldon can wrap up all of these disparate story lines and characters in 2 more books? It seems like she has to drop SOME of them for an actual ending to happen

It would be difficult to overstate how much I love this series. Goodness gracious, Talia's dialogue sparkles and is so perfect and funny

this is much more a polemic against neoliberal capitalism / commercialized liberal feminism than it is against feminism. Crispin seems to be ignoring incredible radical work being done by women (esp WoC) every day
