„I have to tell you something, but not now...“ is the most terrible & predictable phrase in all of fiction. Because they never get around to the talk, the big reveal comes in like a ninja flying-kick from the side and our main leads get spun off into the retarding moment... oh well

1. I was afraid it's was going to be YA - thankfully it is not.
2. There seems to be a lot discussion about the Islamic themes in this book and how well or bad they are. Not being well read in that religion, I admit I missed it entirely and would have accepted the religious current as something entirely new and sprung from the author's creativity, as it also does not consitute an essential part of the story (yet)

I am skimming through this... I like the basic concept, and I like Ireth but the story/writing/characters don't draw me in. The hapless, spineless slave girl: she is sorry ALL THE TIME (I stopped counting how often she says it), literally calls the male lead her 'protector', cannot think to end of her own nose yet insists on saving others but is constantly changing her mental direction like a broken compass needle.

This deserves sooooo much more attention. It is genius.
No sappy dow-eyed heroines, but girls with spine real flaws, and we finally learn what happens when you get your period on a quest- or need a bathroom.

Leigh Bardugo is my personal author discovery of the year (and I realise I may be a little behind everyone else here). Her worlds feel authentic, there is very decent character development and no over-exaggerated tropes, plus an exciting story arch to boot.

Listening to the audiobook is strangely exhausting. The reading is strangely exaggerated- though it fits in certain passages it makes others sound like the characters are on hallucinogenics. Also, they way it's enunciated makes the main character sound like he is a teenager, though from context I have to assume he is much older.

"Fukú americanus, or more colloquially, fukú - generally a curse or doom of some kind; specifically the Curse and the Doom of the New World.
No matter what its name or provenance, it is believed that the arrival of Europeans on Hispaniola unleashed fukú on the world, and we've all been in the shit ever since.”

The book starts out strong and the narrating voice is gritty and witty (ouch, sorry about that)

This book is aggrevating! Everybody is miserable and poor but to do something about it, does not even occur to them. The main literary point (so highlighted in the blurb) has so far formed a sum total of about 5 pages. I fear, I can't warm up to the Russian lit.
