Still info-dumpy in places but it's very eerie and atmospheric. Enjoying this quite a bit

I’m liking this much more than Uprooted so far. It’s slower-paced, but more intense, emotional and atmospheric. It reminds me a lot of The Bear and The Nightingale, which is a *very* good thing.

Very much enjoying this, I've always been a fan of wintery Russian folktales.

This is absolutely hilarious! The first few chapters were a bit confusing but now Willis is in full fledged comedy-of-errors mode and I'm totally enjoying it.

Strange how close the darkness is, even when things seem brightest. Even in the glare of a summer noon, when the sidewalk bakes and iron fences are hot to the touch, the shadows are still with us. They congregate in doorways and porches, and under bridges, and beneath the brims of gentlemen’s hats so you cannot see their eyes... We carry it around with us, the dark, and its influence stains us deep.

Some of the dialog is just ugh and it feels so manufactured at points... but there are some very Rowling-y moments that hit me in the feels. And it seems to be picking up...

Very pulpy SF - at times it feels like the characters have teleprompters attached - but it's twisty and a lot of fun. I'm enjoying this much more than I expected.

I love the way Novik describes Agnieszka's magic. The Dragon really infuriates me, so the ongoing paybacks are giving me a lot of sadistic pleasure.

The flashback chapters in this book are just insanely good. Zafon's being very careful not to overdo them - so far there's just been 3 flashbacks in 300 pages - and my god they're intense.

Very, very good. I'm halfway through a re-read, and this already creepy book is becoming creepier. There are quite a few sinister things lurking under the surface.

Wonderfully weird.
"Houses built on bridges are scandals. A bridge wants to not be. If it could choose its shape, a bridge would be no shape, an unspace to link One-place-town to Another-place-town... But someone had built on this bridge, drawn attention to its matter and failure. An arrogance that thrilled me."

This is fascinating stuff: "I will tell you what happened in the order it happened, as historians do, but there is deep untruth in doing so. I did not live my life as history is written. My mind used to leap ahead, remembering what had not yet come to pass; now, what was past was lost to me. What I tell you now, it took me a long time to find again."

There's some subtle commentary here and I love it.

“The tale tells how the lords hunted while camped in exile, but it doesn't say what their wives and children were living on in their city left ruined and desolate by the enemy. When the heroes came back from the mountain, they were welcomed with a feast. I'd like to know how the women managed it.”

Brilliant explanation of the "always" of the immer vs. the "sometimes" of the manchmal.
