Whimsically grotesque until it’s just plain grotesque. And to what end?

Repetitive, nihilistic, and ultimately dull. McCarthy has a poetic way with words. It’s too bad (for me, the reader) that he uses these words to narrate the same general scene of pointless violence again and again. It’s not shocking, it’s just boring. I will never call early Pynchon an edgelord again.

The scene where the villain who is a seven-foot demon baby picks up a guy by his head and crushes it Popeye-style was kinda neat.

This book keeps approaching something I’m willing to call art, then the chronically unemployed pedophile who wrote it starts to worry he’s not being Gen X Edgy Spagheddgy enough and comes up with things like what I’m gonna call the Cronenberg Horse just to remind you.

Bleak meditation on a rotting world or edgy 80's snuff film put to prose by an outed pedophile? 260 more pages to decide but I'm less impressed than I expected to be.

I don’t even like Hemingway, but if you’re gonna fire shots at Hemingway, your own writing had better be a lot more clever than this. That’s my 2/3rds takeaway in nutshell. This book is fun but continues to demonstrate that it thinks it’s more clever and more profound than it is. It’ll probably still get 3 stars for the fun, but my patience with the author’s ego is wearing thin.
