A book covering the history of naval warfare: from galleys to ballistic missile submarine!

A very informative book. The author is clearly very knowledgeable on the Japanese intellectual history of the Meiji era and after. The main argument is clear: the Japanese modernization is not equal to occidentalisation. As the author said in an interview, during the Meiji period “Japan has never been so Chinese during its modernization”.

TIL: The distance to the steppe is a key factor in determining the trajectory between political fragmentation and empire formation.

Great read. Most useful stuff learned so far: bash history ctrl-r, explanations on 1, 2, stdin stderr, pipe etc.

A great book! Learned a ton on statistics and also data visualisation. Will get back to it.

Ok so far. Found it slightly irksome how the author organize his ideas here and there…

Finished the chapters on middle Asia and Anatolia, Mongols and Turks which are very enjoyable

Highly likely that I won’t finish every chapter …
