Though I was in Viet Nam during TET 1968, I have never known or understood the actual dynamics of the fight for Hue. The diverse perspectives of the combatants is instructive and confirms what I have always wished I could do and that would be to sit down over drinks and a good meal with my former enemies and compare notes, soldier to soldier.

This book is a struggle. Interesting insights into Roman history during the final days and collapse of the Roman Republic. There are many parallels with the current political situation in the US.

This book is not light reading. The intellectual depth that Ellis brings to this episodic history of the American Revolutionary War period is not for those that want the mythological interpretation of our founding. I started reading this book in November 2010 and soon discovered that it was not a cover to cover page turner, but needed thoughtful reading, contemplation and cross reference checking.

So far, the book is ghastly and I have shelved it for the time being.

The reading is complex and, at times, pedantically dense. The author uses extremely long, complex sentences with often only two or less paragraphs per page. The book cannot be read quickly. It requires returning to preceding portions to fully understand the concepts, interpretations, and constructs the author is putting forth.

Excellent writing

I have reshelved this book. I cannot deal with all the psycho babble and the tedious writing style.

I had to rush elves this book after only 25 pages. The tediousness of the writing is an example of why most young people, and many adults shy away from history.

I have abandoned reading this book for now. The style is tedious and after reading "Seven Pillars..." and "Hero..." there is no comparison. I may give it another go at a later time.

Excellent read. The best book about TEL that I have read.

Extraordinary writing of history and biography.

Abandoned this book. Just could not get into the writing style.

Of the three in the Easton Press pirate series, this one is by far the best. The writing is imaginative and tells a story rather than a mere recitation of chronological facts.

Very good

After nearly giving up on the book, by page 62 I began to realize that Pope was not just writing a biographical narrative but was writing a serious historical account and the first portion of the book was setting forth the larger geopolitical context necessary to understanding Morgan and his world.
