It's hard for a young woman to navigate her way through the moral complexities of NYC Society life, true today as it was in the 1890s, when this novel was set. Beautifully written yet unrelentingly catty and witty.

I had some trepidation taking on another multi-narrative tome with reputedly arty pretensions and no clear resolution (spoiler!). But I've really gotten hooked thus far...it's unfolded in a leisurely but not too languid of a pace
